Custom Software Development
Software development services for Houston businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets and generic tools, built around how your teams actually work.
LOCATION
Houston custom software development for healthcare, port and field-based businesses whose work doesn't fit off-the-shelf tools.
Houston companies usually start with us on one of these four kinds of work.
Software development services for Houston businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets and generic tools, built around how your teams actually work.
Internal applications, customer portals and operational systems, designed around your data and connected to the tools you already run.
Custom app development for Android and iPhone, for customers, patients or field crews, built with React Native or Flutter.
Web application development services for Houston companies: dashboards, scheduling systems and portals that work in any browser.
Custom software development is designing and building software around one organization's processes, data and people, instead of changing how the organization works to fit a product built for everyone.
In Houston, that often means software used in more than one place: a clinic and a patient's phone, a terminal and a trucking dispatcher, a job site and the office that schedules it. Off-the-shelf tools tend to serve one of those places well and the others badly.
For the full service, see custom software development.
Software development in Houston follows the city's economy, and that economy is wider than oil and gas.
We work with companies across Greater Houston, from The Woodlands and Katy to Sugar Land, Pearland and Pasadena.
HIPAA is the federal floor. Texas adds its own rules through HB 300, which amended Chapter 181 of the Texas Health and Safety Code and took effect on September 1, 2012, according to the Texas Legislature's bill analysis. Several of its requirements land directly on software.
It reaches further than HIPAA. Texas defines a covered entity broadly. Many businesses that store, transmit or come into possession of protected health information are covered, including some that HIPAA wouldn't treat as covered entities. A health-tech startup or a billing service can be in scope without being a provider.
Electronic records on a deadline. As enacted, a provider using an electronic health record system must supply a patient's records electronically within 15 business days of a written request. That is a reporting and export feature, and it needs to exist before the first request arrives.
Consent for electronic disclosure. Patients must be notified when their information is subject to electronic disclosure, and many disclosures need the individual's separate authorization. Software has to record that consent and check it before data leaves the system.
No selling health data. The law prohibits disclosing protected health information in exchange for payment, with narrow exceptions for treatment, payment and health care operations. Analytics, advertising and data-sharing integrations need to be reviewed against that rule.
Penalties are set per violation and rise sharply when a violation is knowing or intentional. We build the consent records, access logs and export features these rules assume. Your counsel decides how they apply to you. For the full service, see healthcare software development, and our healthcare management system case study for a multi-clinic HIPAA build.
Freight moving through the Houston Ship Channel passes through many hands, and each one keeps its own records. The software problems are mostly about handoffs:
The data comes from partners you don't control. They send it in different formats, at different times and with different gaps. Good freight software assumes some of it will be late or wrong. It flags those exceptions for a person instead of quietly showing a status that isn't true.
Many Houston businesses looking for software help actually need an app. If you're looking for a mobile app development company in Houston, TX, these are the three kinds of app we build most often:
Most Houston mobile application development projects need both Android and iPhone. We build them from one codebase with React Native or Flutter, which keeps one team and one release process instead of two. The choice depends on your existing team and the device features the app needs. For strategy and design across platforms, see mobile app development.
If you're comparing app development companies in Houston, ask each one who will own the app store accounts. They should be in your company's name from the first release, not the agency's.
A common Houston brief comes from a business with crews in the field and coordinators in the office, each working in a different tool. The office schedules work in one system, the crews report back by text and photo, and someone re-types it all at the end of the day.
One custom application can serve both, with each role seeing only what it needs:
The value comes from removing the re-typing, not from adding screens. Each piece of information is entered once, by the person closest to it, and everyone else sees the same record.
What a Houston engagement looks like from week one.
TIMEZONE
Houston is on Central Time. Before work starts, we agree on a daily window when your team and ours are both online. Questions, demos and approvals happen in that window. Everything else moves forward through written updates.
REAL USERS
Software for clinics, terminals and job sites fails on details that a conference room hides. We test early versions with the nurses, dispatchers or crew leads who will use them every day, and change the design before it's expensive to change.
ACCOUNTS
Source code, cloud hosting, app store listings and domains are set up in your company's name from day one. You can see everything we build as we build it, and you keep all of it
HOUSTON
Four things worth knowing before you shortlist a custom software development company in Houston.
Consent records, access logs and record exports designed for HB 300 as well as HIPAA.
Office web apps and field or customer mobile apps built on the same data, by the same team.
If an existing product does the job, we'll say so before you sign anything.
Code, cloud and app store accounts in your name from the first day.
Yes. We work with companies throughout Greater Houston, including Houston itself, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland and Pasadena. All of our work is remote with a daily Central Time overlap, so your location in the region doesn't affect how the project runs.
It may, even if HIPAA doesn't. Texas defines a covered entity broadly, so many businesses that store, transmit or come into possession of protected health information are in scope, not only providers and insurers. The law adds requirements such as electronic record requests, consent for electronic disclosure and a ban on selling health data. Your counsel should confirm how it applies to you.
Yes. We build patient apps for appointments, intake forms, test results and secure messaging on Android and iPhone. Protected health information is encrypted, access is logged, and consent for electronic disclosure is recorded, so the app supports both HIPAA and Texas HB 300 from the first release. It usually connects to your existing scheduling or records system rather than replacing it.
Yes. We build Android apps, usually alongside an iPhone version from the same React Native or Flutter codebase, so both platforms get features at the same time. We publish to Google Play under your company's developer account. If your app only needs to run on Android, for example on company-issued rugged devices, we'll scope it for that.
Yes. We build shipment and container tracking, drayage and appointment scheduling, document workflows for bills of lading and customs paperwork, and customer portals for shippers. Most of the work is combining data from terminals, carriers and customers, and flagging exceptions when a partner's data is late or missing.
Yes, and that's often where the biggest savings are. A single custom application can give office staff a web app for scheduling and reporting, give crews a mobile app for jobs, forms and photos, and give managers a live view of progress. Each person enters information once, and everyone works from the same record.
Custom application development means building an application around your own workflow and data, rather than licensing a product designed for many companies. Buying is usually faster and cheaper when your process is standard. Building pays off when the workflow is what sets you apart, or when the products available would force your teams into workarounds.
